Beyond the ‘betes- DBlogWeek #5

Share an interest, hobby, passion, something that is YOU.  If you want to explore how it relates to or helps with diabetes you can.   Or let it be a part of you that is completely separate from diabetes, because there is more to life than just diabetes!

Who am I, beyond the Diabetes?

It’s tough to pick just one thing to highlight.

I’m a musician:

Saxes, rhythm guitar, clarinet, piano and vocals. I play with a local band in Oceanside, CA on a monthly basis, and I’ve also been known to play with some friends out in the Riverside, CA area that go by the name Willie Jack and the Whiskey Shooters. I’ve been playing music almost my whole life. Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, Marching Band, Pep Band, Jazz Band and the like all the way through from middle school, high school, and college. I consider myself fortunate to still have opportunities to get out and jam.

I’m a bowler:

BowlingYeah, that sport where you roll a heavy ball down a 48-inch-wide, 60-foot-long strip of oiled wood and try to knock down 10 pins with one shot. I bowl in 3 different leagues, ranging in “seriousness” from “We’re all just here for the beer and to have some fun” to “Handicap? You don’t get a stinkin’ handicap in this league.”

It’s actually decent low-intensity exercise. You walk a mile every 3 games- and that doesn’t include running back and forth to the bar for more beer.

The bowling alley is also a great equalizer. It doesn’t matter how old (or young) you are. It doesn’t matter how much money you make. All that matters is how well you roll the ball. It’s a great way to meet people and build connections in the community, and on top of that, it’s just plain FUN.

I’m a professional nerd:

That’s my day job. I design, build, implement, and maintain networks of computer systems to run a whole slew of websites, maintain and report data about coastal water quality, and even how much trash might have been picked up by volunteers at your local beach this past weekend. It’s not necessarily exciting or sexy, but I’m basically responsible for keeping a teensy-weensy piece of the internet working. And it’s not just web stuff. I’m also an email admin, network administrator, and wear other IT hats as well- including being the guy who replaces the keyboard when you spill coffee on your company laptop.

Plus, I’m a PWD:

Let’s not forget that. It’s why I started this blog after all. BUT- I do all of that stuff above (and more besides), despite having the 24/7/365 job of monitoring blood sugar levels, dosing insulin, messing up, over-correcting, messing up in the other direction, sitting drinking a juice box for 10 minutes, and then at the end of the day, falling asleep so that I can get up again the next day and do it all again.

Yep, it’s tiring at times. But the thing about life is that you have to LIVE IT.

So, to all of you cats that are out there doing your thing despite diabetes, and not letting it hold you back- Stay out there and keep kicking ass.
